SASSA Status Messages Explained

Your SRD result shows a status for each month. This page explains what each status means and what to do next.

Important to understand

  • SRD results are month by month.
  • You can be approved for one month and declined for another.
  • A status can change later after checks or manual review.

Approved

Approved means you passed the checks for that month and SASSA is preparing payment.

  • Approval is month by month, not permanent.
  • A payment date shows when payment is scheduled.
  • If your payday changes, it can be a batch update or banking verification change.

Approved with a payment date

A payment date means SASSA scheduled payment for that month.

  • Money can reflect after bank processing time.
  • Some banks reflect later than others.
  • If it changes to failed or reversed, fix your banking details.

Approved but no payment date

This usually means the month is approved but the payment batch has not been assigned yet, or something is still being verified.

  • Recheck later. Paydays can appear after approval.
  • Confirm your banking details are verified and in your name.
  • If it stays missing, use the fix page below.

Approved later changed to pending or declined

This can happen if SASSA re-runs checks, updates verification, or updates payment batches.

  • If it changes to pending, it is still under review for that month.
  • If it changes to declined, check the reason and appeal that month if it is wrong.
  • Keep checking monthly. One month can change without affecting other months.

Pending

Pending means SASSA has your application and is still running checks for the month you are viewing.

  • Your eligibility is assessed month by month.
  • SASSA checks identity and income sources before approval.
  • A pending month can later change to approved or declined.
  • If it stays pending for long, something might be blocking the checks.

How long pending can take

Pending does not have one fixed time. It depends on verification and system volume.

  • If you applied recently, pending is normal.
  • If the month is still in progress, pending can remain until checks finish.
  • At peak periods, updates can be slower.
  • Your result can change late in the month.

What to do while you are pending

  • Recheck your status after 24 to 48 hours.
  • Make sure your ID number and phone number are correct.
  • If you changed banks, confirm your bank details are correct and in your name.
  • Avoid making repeated changes every day. It can slow verification.

If you applied recently

Pending is normal for new applications while checks run.

  • Do not submit new applications again.
  • Check your status every few days.
  • Make sure you can receive OTPs on your registered phone number.

If you have been pending for many weeks

Long pending often means a check is not completing.

  • Your phone number might be outdated or you cannot receive OTPs.
  • Identity verification might be failing silently.
  • System backlogs can delay updates.
  • If nothing changes for a long time, contact SASSA.

If identity checks are the issue

If your details do not match Home Affairs records, approval cannot happen.

  • Check your ID number and name spelling.
  • If your surname changed, Home Affairs updates may be required.
  • Use the identity verification steps below.

If income checks are suspected

If a system detects possible income or support, your month can stay pending longer or later change to declined.

  • A pending month can later change to declined with a reason.
  • If it becomes Income Source Identified, you can appeal that month if it is wrong.

Declined

A declined result applies to one specific month, not your whole application.

  • You can be approved for one month and declined for another.
  • SASSA runs checks again each month, so results can change.
  • The decline reason is the key. Your next step depends on it.

What to do next

Step 1: Confirm the decline reason on the official portal.

Step 2: If the reason is correct, fix what you can and keep checking monthly.

Step 3: If the reason is wrong, appeal that month. Appeals are done per month.

Income Source Identified

This means SASSA found money linked to your ID number above the SRD income limit for that month. It applies only to that month.

How SASSA checks income

  • SASSA runs a monthly means test using your ID number.
  • It checks multiple databases to look for income or deposits.
  • If any source shows income above the threshold, the month is declined.
  • The check repeats every month, so results can change.

Common reasons this appears

  • A temporary deposit into your bank account.
  • Money received from family or friends.
  • A short term job payment or stipend.
  • Old UIF or NSFAS records not yet cleared.
  • Interest or refunds that pushed you above the limit.

If the income flag is correct

If you did receive money above the limit, there is no fix for that month.

  • Wait for the next month’s reassessment.
  • Avoid deposits that could trigger the limit again.
  • You can be approved again next month if no income is detected.

If the income flag is wrong

If you did not receive income, you must appeal that month.

  • Open the official SRD appeals page.
  • Enter your ID number and the phone number used for SRD.
  • Select the declined month.
  • Submit a reason explaining why the detected income is incorrect.

Declined: UIF registered

This can happen if UIF records still show an active claim or recent benefit history.

  • If you are not receiving UIF, appeal and state this clearly.
  • If you did receive UIF previously, the system may still flag that month.
  • Check future months because it can fall away once records update.

Declined: NSFAS registered

This can happen if the system detects NSFAS support or student funding for that period.

  • If you are not funded, appeal and explain that you are not receiving NSFAS support.
  • If you are funded, you may be ineligible for that month.
  • Check future months in case the flag was temporary or incorrect.

Identity Verification Failed

This means SASSA could not match your details with Department of Home Affairs records. This can stop approval and payment until the mismatch is resolved.

Most common causes

  • Surname or first name spelling does not match Home Affairs.
  • Name change not updated at Home Affairs.
  • Incorrect ID number entered during application.
  • Using an old green ID book with unreadable data.
  • Biometric or facial verification failure.

Step 1: Double check your details

  • Check your ID number digit by digit.
  • Confirm your name and surname match your ID exactly.
  • Look for spacing or spelling differences.
  • Confirm your date of birth matches your ID.

Step 2: Update Home Affairs records if needed

  • Visit Home Affairs to correct your name or surname.
  • Apply for a Smart ID card if you still use a green ID book.
  • Wait for Home Affairs to update your record before retrying.
  • Recheck your SRD status after the update.

Step 3: Lodge an appeal

  • Go to the official SRD appeals portal.
  • Enter your ID number and registered phone number.
  • Select the declined month.
  • Submit your appeal and wait for review.

Step 4: When to contact SASSA

  • You already updated Home Affairs records.
  • Your appeal result is still declined.
  • Your status never changes after many weeks.

Declined: Reapplication required

This usually means your SRD application needs to be submitted again for the current cycle.

  • Use the official SRD site to reapply.
  • Use the same ID number and phone number used on your SRD profile.
  • After reapplying, check status again for the next month’s result.

Declined for another reason

If the decline wording is different, follow the safe path.

  • Confirm the exact reason on the official portal.
  • Fix the issue if it is correct.
  • If it is wrong, appeal that month on the official appeals portal.

Referred

Referred means the system could not complete a check automatically, so your application or month was sent for manual review.

  • It is not an approval and not a decline.
  • A referred month can later change to approved, pending, or declined.
  • The next step depends on what is blocking verification.

What to do first if you see referred

  • Recheck your status on the official portal to confirm the month is still referred.
  • Make sure your ID number and phone number are correct.
  • Check your banking details are in your name and active.
  • If referred stays for a long time, contact SASSA to ask what is blocking the review.

Referred because of identity checks

  • Check your ID number and personal details are correct.
  • If you changed surname, your Home Affairs record must match.
  • If verification fails, it may later change to Identity Verification Failed.

Referred because of income checks

  • A referred month can later change to declined with a reason.
  • If it becomes Income Source Identified, you can appeal that month.
  • Keep bank proof ready if the decline is incorrect.

Referred because of application details

  • Your phone number might be outdated or not receiving OTPs.
  • Your banking details might be missing or still verifying.
  • Fix number or banking issues using the pages below.

Referred because of system backlog

  • Recheck your status every few days.
  • Avoid making repeated changes daily unless fixing a clear error.
  • If it stays referred for a long time, contact SASSA to confirm what is needed.

If your referred month changes to declined

  • Appeals are done per month.
  • Prepare proof if the decline reason is incorrect.
  • Use the official appeals process only.

Application Not Found

This appears when the SRD portal cannot find an application linked to the details you entered.

  • Your ID number and phone number do not match what was used on the application.
  • You never completed an SRD application successfully.
  • Your record is not loading due to a system issue.
  • You are using old or incorrect applicant details.

Step 1: Check your details exactly

  • Enter your 13 digit ID number with no spaces.
  • Enter the phone number you used when you applied, not your current number if it changed.
  • Try again later if the site is slow or not loading properly.
  • If you have dual SIMs, confirm you are using the correct number linked to SRD.

If you never applied

  • Apply on the official SRD website.
  • Use a phone number you can access for OTPs.
  • Keep your banking details ready because payment can be blocked later if they are wrong.

If your phone number changed

If you cannot access the old number, update it using the official process.

If you applied long ago

  • Confirm you are using the same ID number and the same phone number used at the time.
  • If you cannot access the old number, update it using the official process.
  • If you are told to reapply, follow the reapplication steps.

If the portal is glitching

  • Try again later, especially outside peak hours.
  • Use alternative channels if available.
  • If it stays the same for days, contact SASSA for account support.

Status Not Updating

This means your SRD result is stuck on the same month or message for too long.

  • The month is still under review.
  • There is a system delay or backlog.
  • Banking or identity details are blocking progress.
  • The portal has not refreshed your record yet.

Step 1: Check if your month is still under review

  • If your status says pending, your month is still being checked.
  • Pending reviews can take days or even weeks.
  • No action is needed unless it stays pending for a long time.

Step 2: Look for hidden blocks

  • Banking details pending or not verified.
  • Identity verification failed.
  • Alternative income source flagged.
  • Phone number issues stopping OTP updates.

Step 3: System delays and backlogs

  • Month changes can lag behind by several days.
  • Payment batches may be assigned late.
  • Portal errors can delay visible updates.

If your result has not changed for more than 30 days, use Step 4.

Step 4: When to contact SASSA

  • Your month is stuck on pending for over 30 days.
  • Your approved month has no payday for a long time.
  • Your status keeps showing the same outdated message.

Before you leave

  • Always confirm your result on the official SRD portal.
  • If your month is declined and the reason is wrong, appeal that month.
  • If your status is stuck for weeks with no clear reason, contact SASSA.
